Egypt's New Electricity Tariffs: April 2026

The Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy has officially announced new electricity tariff increases, effective from April 2026. This decision comes in response to the ongoing global energy crisis and rising resource costs.

What Changed?

Residential Tariffs:

  • Tiers 1-7 (up to 2,000 kWh/month): No change — prices remain frozen
  • Tier 8 (above 2,000 kWh/month): +16% increase — from 2.23 to 2.58 EGP/kWh
  • 86% of all residential subscribers are exempt from any increase

Commercial Tariffs:
  • All tiers increased by an average of 20%
  • 0-100 kWh: 1.00 EGP/kWh (was 0.85)
  • 101-250 kWh: 2.00 EGP/kWh (was 1.68)
  • 251-600 kWh: 2.64 EGP/kWh (was 2.20)
  • 601-1,000 kWh: 2.72 EGP/kWh (was 2.27)
  • Above 1,000 kWh: 2.79 EGP/kWh (was 2.33)

What This Means for Solar Asset Owners

Every electricity price increase directly improves the economics of solar energy. Here is why:

1. Higher Savings Per kWh
When grid electricity costs more, every kilowatt-hour your solar system produces saves you more money. A commercial facility consuming 5,000 kWh/month now pays 2.79 EGP/kWh instead of 2.33 — that is an extra 2,300 EGP per month in potential savings.

2. Faster Payback Period
Higher electricity rates mean your solar investment pays for itself faster. What used to take 4-5 years for commercial installations may now take 3.5-4 years.

3. Higher Long-Term Returns
Solar panel owners benefit from a natural hedge against inflation. As electricity prices continue to rise, the value of your solar production increases proportionally.

The Bigger Picture

Egypt's electricity tariff trajectory has been consistently upward since the government committed to eliminating subsidies. This latest increase confirms the trend and reinforces why solar energy ownership is the smartest long-term energy strategy.
